Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Whether you’re missing just a few teeth or all of them, dentures can replace them, allowing you to bite, chew, and speak with ease.

Dentures are custom-made oral prosthetics to restore your oral function. Today’s advanced technology makes dentures that are comfortable, easy to adjust to, and easy to wear.

Dr. Trogan offers different types of dentures to both restore the function of your teeth and also give you an attractive smile.

Choices include:

Partial dentures

Partial dentures are used to replace some of your teeth. They consist of several replacement teeth attached to gum-colored plastic affixed to a metal piece, which holds your dentures in place. Partial dentures prevent your other natural teeth from shifting or changing positions.

Complete dentures

Complete dentures replace all of your teeth. Dr. Trogan offers both immediate and conventional dentures.

Immediate dentures replace your natural teeth the same day you have them extracted, so you don’t have to go without teeth for any period of time. Because your gums need time to heal, this type doesn’t provide the best fit.

Conventional dentures are custom-made to conform to your mouth for a perfect fit. They sit on top of your gums and are usually placed 8-12 weeks after your extractions are complete.

Both partial and complete dentures can be removable or fixed.

What are the benefits of dentures?

Your teeth affect your ability to chew food well, speak properly, and maintain your facial appearance. When your teeth are missing, you can have hollow facial features, which can affect your self-esteem.

Dentures enhance your:

  • Chewing
  • Speech
  • Facial structure
  • Dental aesthetics

Both partial and complete dentures fill in the gaps left by missing teeth, giving you overall support for your mouth and face.

How do I take care of my dentures?

Dentures need to stay moist all the time. If you have removable dentures, they should sit in cold water or a soaking solution when they’re not in your mouth. To prevent them from warping, be sure not to put them in hot water.

Clean your dentures at least twice a day just like you clean your natural teeth. This removes bacteria and food. Brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a nonabrasive cleanser. Dr. Trogan can also recommend a deep-cleaning product for routine deep cleaning.
