Researchers are Developing a New Biomaterial to Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

As we have discussed in a previous post, tooth sensitivity is one of the most common issues that affect dental patients. The sharp pains some experience from cold or hot temperatures is not just uncomfortable, it can also lead to more severe issues down the road.

Just as a re-cap, tooth sensitivity occurs when the enamel on your teeth wears away, exposing small porous tubes which allow the nerves in your teeth to become more vulnerable to the elements.

That’s why Chun-Pin Lin, professor of dentistry at National Taiwan University, and his colleagues are developing a new biomaterial that can potentially rebuild worn enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity for an extended period of time.

There are already a few treatments out today that aim to reduce tooth sensitivity, such as special toothpastes like Sensodyne. These products work by temporarily closing the exposed tubes, however, the effect is unfortunately only temporary as daily activities like brushing your teeth and eating can cause the paste to wear away.

Lin’s team of researches have developed a paste that is more durable by using calcium and phosphorous, elements that are naturally found in your teeth.

The tested the effectiveness of this new paste by applying it to dogs teeth and observing the blocking capabilities. Based on their research, they observed that their new biomaterial paste was able to go deeper inside of the the exposed tubes. This depth could be essential to rebuilding worn out enamel and reducing tooth sensitivity for a longer period of time.

This new paste is still in development, but it shows great promise for the future of dentistry! Chun-Pin Lin and his team’s report can be found in the journal ACS Nano.
