Itero Scanner Makes Dental Crowns A Pleasant Experience
It has often been said that technology eliminates human error, and it has certainly proved to be true with the Itero Scanner. Last week, our professionals at Signature Smile General and Cosmetic Dentistry discussed the effect of the Itero Scanner on the Invisalign process. This week we are going to highlight how the Itero Scanner makes the insertion of a crown a more pleasant experience for our patients.
What is a dental crown?
Dental crowns are used cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. In addition to strengthening a damaged tooth, a dental crown can also be used to improve the appearance, alignment and shape of the tooth.
How Are Dental Crowns Made?
Before your dentist can make your crown, you tooth must be decreased to enable the crown to fit over it. Thereafter, your dentist will create an impression of your tooth that will serve as an exact mold of your tooth. The accuracy of the mold is extremely important, as it will be used to create the crown for your tooth. Traditional molds were made out of mixture of water and gypsum powder that expanded in the patient’s mouth, creating the mold. This process proved to be rather nightmarish for patients with strong gag reflexes, until the Itero Scanner was invented.
How Does The Itero Scanner the Dental Crown Process Easier?
In addition to the Itero Scanner completely outdating traditional mold, it provides several benefits to the patient.
Firstly, patients with strong gag reflexes do not have to endure the agony of the traditional mold expanding their mouth. The Itero simply takes a “picture” of the tooth – so no need for gooey, messy and foul tasting materials being placed into your mouth.
Traditional molds were also prone to error resulting in inaccurate molds being created, making the process longer for both the patient and the dentist. The Itero Scanner takes a digital impression of the tooth and can be sent to the lab with a click of a button. Traditional molds are not poured into stone models for up to three days from time that they are taken. This opens the possibility of the contraction or expansion of the material during the transportation of the mold. The Itero Scanner eliminates the risk of external factors possible altering the mold, resulting in better fitting crowns.
A study conducted by dental professionals also found that crowns scanned by the Itero Scanner are inserted five times quicker than crowns made from traditional impressions.
